A private alternative to ChatGPT on iPhone: what changes, what you give up
People usually arrive at this question after noticing how much of their life has ended up in a chat window. If privacy is the reason you want an alternative, the useful question is not which chatbot to switch to. It is where the model runs. Here is what changes when it runs on the phone, feature by feature, and what you give up.
How ChatGPT works
ChatGPT is a cloud service. When you send a message it travels to OpenAI's servers, a very large model answers there, and the reply comes back. There is nothing wrong with that; it is the only way a model of that size can exist. It also means every conversation is, by construction, data on someone else's computer, kept under their policies, tied to your account. The plans run from free to $8 (Go), $20 (Plus) and $100 or $200 (Pro) a month.
Many of the alternatives you will find are the same design with a different logo: another cloud model, another set of policies. Switching between them changes the promise you rely on, not the architecture.
What changes when the model is on the phone
The conversation has nowhere to go. Orvena runs Qwen 3.5 4B on the iPhone, or on iOS 27 Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device model, so what you type is answered on the device, and there is no Orvena server for it to be sent to. Turn on airplane mode and it keeps working, which is a quicker check than any policy page.
There is no account. A cloud service has to know whom to bill for each message; a model on your phone does not, so nothing asks for your email.
Your own data can be used without leaving. Orvena reads your calendar, reminders, photos and Apple Health summary as tools, on the phone, and shows a card for each thing it does. If a later step would send any of that off the device, to a cloud model you connected with your own key, for instance, it stops and asks, naming where the data would go. Private Cloud Compute asks once instead, when you choose it: from then on each answer sends the conversation and the tool results it needs to Apple's servers, and only health or financial data asks again every time.
The economics change too. With no per-message cost to cover, the assistant is free without limits, and one $14.99 purchase covers the extras. There is no subscription because there is nothing recurring to pay for.

What you give up
A model that fits in a phone is smaller than the models behind ChatGPT, and those are better at long research, essays, specialized knowledge and sheer breadth. Orvena also has no memory of you between conversations, by design: there is no profile being built anywhere, which means there is also none to help it. It cannot import your ChatGPT history. And it needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, because the model needs 8 GB of memory.
Orvena's model is good at what people actually ask an assistant on a phone: logistics, drafting, summaries, reading an image, getting something done with the calendar or an alarm. When you need more, Premium adds Apple's Private Cloud Compute on iOS 27, with no key to set up, or a cloud model with your own OpenRouter key, including OpenAI's, and Orvena asks for consent per provider before anything leaves. The default stays on the phone, and leaving it is a choice you make: per conversation with OpenRouter, or once, on the Models page, for Private Cloud Compute.
A different job
ChatGPT is a place you go to think and write. Orvena is the thing that operates your phone: it moves the meeting, sets the alarm after working out the travel time, finds the photos from last spring, checks tomorrow's weather at nine tonight and tells you what it found. Every action leaves a card, anything that deletes or cancels asks first, and the ones that can be undone have an Undo button.

Common questions
Does Orvena use ChatGPT or OpenAI models?
Not by default. Orvena answers with Qwen 3.5 4B on the iPhone, or with Apple Intelligence on iOS 27. There is no subscription.
Can I import my ChatGPT conversation history?
